If your company is thinking about buying a barrel of bourbon for client or employee gifts, the first question is simple: how many bottles is that? This guide answers it, explains why the count moves, and shows how a one-barrel gift program works with your own label. It is general information for planning a gift program. 21+ only.
For planning a corporate gift program, one barrel of bourbon is roughly 200 bottles, each one 750ml. That is the size of our private barrel bourbon program: about one barrel, with the exact bottle count confirmed on your quote. Rye programs are the same shape.
The standard bourbon barrel holds 53 gallons when it is filled. On paper, that much liquid would fill about 265 bottles of 750ml. Real barrels yield fewer once aging and proof are counted.
Spirit soaks into the wood and evaporates through it while the barrel ages, which distillers call the angel's share. An older barrel usually has less left in it than a younger one. See aged vs unaged spirits.
Most bourbon is cut with water to its bottling proof, which adds volume. Barrel-proof bourbon is bottled without that, so the same barrel fills fewer bottles. Our guide to choosing a proof covers the tradeoff.
Every barrel ages a little differently, so two barrels from the same warehouse can yield different counts. That is why the quote, not a formula, sets your final number.
Roughly 200 bottles fits a client list, an employee list or both. Some companies split one barrel across several moments: a year-end client thank-you, a sales kickoff, and bottles held back for retirements and service awards. Every bottle carries your company's own front label, which you design and approve. See retirement and milestone gifts and sales incentive gifts for ideas.
If your list is much smaller than a barrel, a different spirit may fit better. Vodka, gin, rum and ready-to-drink programs aren't barrel programs, and their program size is confirmed on the quote. See custom whiskey and bourbon bottles and private label liquor.
