Can You Send Alcohol as a Corporate Gift?

By Handled · · 5 min · 21+

Yes, a company can send alcohol as a corporate gift, but it does not ship like a coffee mug. Spirits are regulated, shipping rules vary by state, and the bottle has to go through a licensed seller and be signed for by an adult 21 or older. This guide covers the basics so you can plan a gifting program without surprises.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change and differ by state and sometimes by locality. If you have a specific question about your company or your recipients, talk to your own attorney or compliance team. 21+ only.

Is it legal to send alcohol as a corporate gift?

In many cases, yes. But "can I send it" breaks into two different questions:

  • Handing a bottle to someone in person. This is a gift between adults, and it is usually much simpler.
  • Shipping a bottle to someone's address. This is where state alcohol shipping rules apply, and where most of the planning goes.

If you are shipping, the bottle generally needs to be sold and shipped by a seller that is licensed to do it, to an address in a state that allows it, and to an adult who signs for it. That is why a company cannot simply buy a bottle at a store and drop it in the mail.

Why do shipping rules vary by state?

Alcohol in the US is regulated state by state. Some states allow shipments from licensed sellers directly to consumers. Some limit how much can be sent, require specific licenses or carriers, or do not allow direct shipments of spirits at all. A few have rules that differ by county or city.

The rules also change over time. That is why a published list of "allowed states" can be out of date by the time you read it, and why a responsible seller confirms eligibility address by address. Our guide to DTC alcohol shipping by state goes deeper on how this works.

Who is allowed to ship it?

Spirits sold and shipped to people in the US go through licensed sellers. Standard postal service generally does not carry alcohol, and carriers that do move it expect the shipper to hold the right licenses and use adult-signature delivery. A gift box from a general retailer or a courier you hire on your own is usually not a legal path.

On a Handled corporate gifting order, a licensed retailer partner is the merchant of record. That partner sells and ships the bottles. Handled handles everything before that: sourcing the spirit, designing your label, filing it for federal label approval (a TTB COLA), and bottling. For how label approval works, see what a COLA is.

What does an adult signature mean for a gift?

Every recipient must be 21 or older, and an adult 21 or older must be present to sign for the delivery. Packages with alcohol cannot be left at the door.

That has a practical effect on gifts. A recipient who is not home may miss the delivery, and a bottle sent to an office is not useful if no one 21 or older is there to sign. For a smoother delivery:

  • Tell each recipient a bottle is coming, and that an adult needs to sign.
  • Use an address where someone is available during delivery hours.
  • Give complete names, addresses and phone numbers on your recipient list.

Where can Handled ship?

Handled's licensed retailer partners ship to most but not all US states. Eligibility is confirmed at checkout for each address, so you know before anything ships. If an address is not eligible, you can choose another address or a bulk delivery for that recipient.

Programs ship within the United States.

Bulk delivery or direct to each recipient?

Both are options, and many programs mix them:

  • Bulk to your company. One delivery to a business address or event venue, and your team hands out the bottles in person. An adult 21 or older signs for the delivery.
  • Direct to each recipient. You upload a list and each bottle ships to its own address. This suits remote teams and client lists in many places.

See direct-to-recipient shipping and shipping and eligibility for the details.

What else should you check before sending?

Shipping rules are only part of it. Before you finalize a list, check:

  • Client gift policies. Some industries and public-sector clients limit gifts or alcohol. Financial and legal clients and companies with their own policies may too.
  • Your own company's policy. Some workplaces have rules about alcohol, and some employees do not drink. Think about whether a bottle is the right gift for everyone on the list.
  • Recipient age. Every recipient must be 21 or older. If you are not sure, leave them off the list.
  • Timing. Custom-label bottles have a lead time of 10 to 12 weeks, so plan the date well ahead.

What if a recipient does not drink?

Not everyone does, and that is fine. For employee programs especially, think about whether a non-drinker would feel left out, and consider offering a different gift to those people. A good program respects the list.

How does a custom-label bottle fit in?

A custom-label bottle is your company's own bottle: your name and logo on the front label, 750ml of real spirit inside, and a short message for the occasion. For bourbon and rye, programs start at about one barrel, roughly 200 bottles. For vodka, gin, tequila and rum, program size is confirmed on the quote.
