To launch your own whiskey as a creator, you choose a style, a barrel story, and a proof. You do not distill, age stock for years yourself, or hold a federal permit. On a Handled drop, a licensed producer bottles under the right TTB class/type, the licensed retailer sells as merchant of record, and you keep 20% of SRP. 21+.
Whiskey is the storyteller’s category — mash bill, oak, finish, name — but it is also the category with the strictest labeling traps. “Bourbon” is not a vibe. It is a TTB class/type. If the liquid does not qualify, the label cannot say it. This guide walks the decisions that actually matter before you email lfd@handledspirits.com.
No. Someone needs the permits. On a Handled drop, that someone is not you.
Federal basic permits, COLA label approval, compliant production, and retail sale sit with licensed partners. You license your name and creative onto a bottle a permitted producer is allowed to fill. For the license side in plain language, read Do You Need a License to Sell Your Own Whiskey? For the label certificate itself, see What Is a COLA?
That split is what makes a creator whiskey drop realistic. You own the brand and the audience. The chain owns compliance.
Start from how your audience already drinks, then match a style you can talk about for a whole launch window. Common lanes:
If you are still choosing among whiskey, vodka, tequila, or RTD, use Choose Your Spirit first. Whiskey wins when your audience already treats a bottle as a keepable object, not only a mixer.
Most whiskey people expect color, oak, and softness that come from time in wood. Aging adds vanilla, caramel, spice, and color. Unaged or lightly rested whiskey stays sharper and clearer, and it is a narrower creator play.
On a Handled timeline you are not waiting years in a personal warehouse. Appropriately aged stock is sourced through licensed production partners so a drop can still move from go-ahead toward bottles on a creator timeline (around 10 weeks from signed agreement on the Handled path). The creative job is choosing the profile you can film: sipping neat, whiskey ginger, or a signature pour your audience already knows. Deeper barrel tradeoffs live in Aged or Unaged.
Proof is a positioning choice, not a flex. Higher proof reads bolder and cuts through ice and mixers. Lower proof reads smoother for neat pours and wider audiences.
Pick the proof that matches the content you will actually shoot. If every video ends with a cocktail, a mixer-friendly proof helps. If your audience collects bottles and drinks neat, lean into a sipping profile. You can set proof alongside style during production direction — you describe the character; the licensed producer executes within what the COLA will allow. Nothing upfront on the Handled creator path. Handled coordinates sourcing, licensed production, COLA filing, compliance, and fulfillment through the licensed retailer. A licensed retailer is merchant of record. Handled is a KY wholesaler only. You keep 20% of SRP (not net) on bottles sold.
Ships through a licensed retailer (merchant of record); our retail partners support most but not all US states. Checkout confirms eligibility. Drops are limited releases built to sell out; run size and launch mechanics matter more than claiming a protected whiskey subclass before TTB has it on the label.
Stay inside what is true on the approved label.
Your edge is the story only you can tell: why this bottle exists, who it is for, and how you drink it. The liquid and the license chain have to be able to carry that story in public.
Can I call my drop bourbon? Only if the finished product’s TTB class/type is bourbon and the COLA says so. Until then, call it whiskey (or the accurate approved class).
Do I need my own DSP or liquor license? No. Licensed partners hold production and retail. You brand the drop.
How long until bottles? On the Handled path, it's around 10 weeks from signed agreement — you are not personally aging new make for years.
Where can it ship? Through a licensed retailer (merchant of record). Our retail partners support most but not all US states, and checkout confirms eligibility before anyone pays. Checkout confirms eligibility.
What do I keep? 20% of SRP, not net.
Lock style (and whether bourbon is actually allowed), barrel story, and proof in a few honest sentences. Then hand compliance and production to the licensed chain. Email lfd@handledspirits.com to start.
Handled drops are for adults of legal drinking age (21+). Please enjoy responsibly.
