Launch Your Own Rum

Yes. You can launch your own rum brand without owning a distillery, a warehouse of barrels, or a seven-figure build. On a Handled drop, we purchase rum barrels and bottle them through licensed partners; you own the brand, the story, and the audience. You choose style and direction. Partners handle bottling, labeling, and the licensed retail path. 21+.

Creators search “launch your own rum” because whiskey and tequila get most of the airtime — and because rum’s style map (white, gold, aged, spiced) looks confusing from the outside. The plain version: pick a lane your audience already drinks, lock class/type with partners, and ship through licensed retail. Email lfd@handledspirits.com when you want that mapped to a drop calendar.

What kinds of rum can a creator actually launch?

U.S. labels have to match TTB class and type rules. Partners help you land on a legal designation; you do not invent a category on the bottle. Common creator-friendly lanes:

Never call a spirit something the label cannot support. That rule cuts both ways: do not call a rum “bourbon,” and do not stretch age or origin claims past what TTB allows. For whiskey-specific choices, see Launch Your Own Whiskey.

Do you need to age rum before you can sell it?

No. Many rums sell unaged or lightly rested. Aging is a product choice, not a legal minimum for every rum style.

On Handled drops, barrel aging is not the lead-time driver. We source and purchase barrels that have already been aged — so aging does not add weeks or months to the drop calendar.

Aging still changes three things creators feel on a drop:

If your first drop needs to move on a short calendar, white or gold lanes are often the practical start (story, price, and mixer fit). Aged rum is a strong second release once the brand has proof with buyers — not because aging adds weeks to the build. For the broader spirit-choice frame, read Choose Your Spirit.

How does a Handled rum drop work without your own still?

You and Handled lock spirit lane, brand direction, bottle count, and launch window. We purchase rum barrels and bottle them — our partners do not make the rum. When a COLA (label approval) is required, partners drive that filing so the bottle can sell legally.

Retail sale runs through licensed retailer partners as merchant of record (we work with multiple retailers). Handled is a Kentucky wholesaler only. Retailer partners ship to most US states; eligibility is confirmed at checkout. Buyers pass age checks at checkout. You do not buy inventory up front. Creators earn 20% of SRP (suggested retail price), not a cut of net.

That split matters in copy and in DMs: talk about the creator cut as 20% of SRP, never as “net profit” or a guaranteed income number.

What should you decide before you announce a rum drop?

Lock these before the first teaser goes live:

  1. Style lane — white, gold, aged, or flavored, with a label story that matches
  2. Proof / ABV — drinkable for your audience, legal for the class/type
  3. Bottle and label — look, name, and claims partners can approve
  4. Drop size — bottle count you can actually sell without inventing demand
  5. Content plan — why this rum, why now, and where the buy link lives on launch day

Rum sells on clarity. Buyers should know in one scroll whether this is a mixer rum, a sipper, or a flavored bottle — and that every buyer is 21+.

Rum vs whiskey for a first creator drop — which is easier?

“Easier” depends on your audience, not on a universal rule. Whiskey often carries barrel-and-heritage expectations. Rum often carries mixer and occasion expectations. If your community already posts beach, patio, or cocktail content, rum can feel native. If they already chase whiskey drops, start there instead.

Production partners can advise on lead time for the lane you pick. Your job is brand and demand. Their job is bottling, label, and licensed sale.

FAQ

Can I launch a rum brand if I am not a distiller?

Yes. On a Handled drop, we purchase rum barrels and bottle them; you own the brand and the audience. Contact lfd@handledspirits.com to walk the path.

Do I need my own liquor licenses to sell the rum?

Someone needs the right licenses. On this model, production and retail partners hold them. Handled is KY wholesaler only.

Where can buyers receive the bottles?

Retailer partners ship to most US states. Eligibility is confirmed at checkout. Age verification applies. 21+ only.

How do creators get paid on a rum drop?

Creators earn 20% of SRP after the drop — not a percentage of net, and not an income guarantee.

Can I call my rum whatever I want on the label?

No. Class, type, age, and origin claims have to match TTB rules and what is in the bottle. Partners help keep the label honest.

Handled drops are for adults of legal drinking age (21+). Please enjoy responsibly.
