How Long to Launch

By Handled • Published

On a Handled drop, the timeline typically runs around 10 weeks from signed agreement. You do not build a distillery, buy inventory, or wait years for a traditional brand build. Licensed partners handle production, TTB label approval, and retail sale; you own the brand and the audience. 21+.

That timeline is the real answer creators are searching for when they ask how long it takes to launch a liquor brand. The old path was measured in years and six-figure capital. The drop path compresses the work into a short sequence — creative decisions first, compliance and fulfillment with licensed partners, then a limited release. Email lfd@handledspirits.com when you are ready to start the clock.

What does the timeline actually include?

The clock starts when you and Handled sign the agreement for the drop: spirit lane, brand name direction, bottle story, and the audience you will bring. Your creator payout comes later: 30 days after orders are fulfilled. Between signing and the drop sit the steps that used to take years on a DIY brand build.

You keep 20% of SRP (suggested retail price), not a cut of net. A licensed retailer is the merchant of record. Handled is a Kentucky wholesaler only. Fulfillment runs through the licensed retailer. That split is why a creator can move on a weeks-scale calendar instead of a capital-heavy one.

What slows a traditional liquor brand launch?

Traditional timelines balloon because one founder tries to own every license and every warehouse decision:

None of that disappears on a drop. It moves to licensed partners so your calendar is creative work, audience work, and launch — not permit shopping.

What happens in those weeks?

Exact calendars vary by spirit style and label complexity, but the shape is consistent:

  1. Brand and liquid decisions — name direction, spirit lane, proof story, and what you can truthfully say on the label. Never call a drop bourbon unless TTB class/type supports it.
  2. Label and COLA — compliant artwork and federal label approval. For the certificate itself, read What Is a COLA?
  3. Production against demand — licensed production timed to the drop, not a speculative warehouse buy.
  4. Drop live, then payout — checkout, age verification, and shipping through the licensed retailer; your share pays after close. Details live in When Do You Get Paid?

Your job in that window is the part only you can do: story, content, waitlist, and launch energy. The compliance clock runs in parallel with people who already hold the right licenses.

Think of the weeks as two tracks running at once. Track one is yours: name, story, content calendar, waitlist, and the launch posts only your audience will trust. Track two is the licensed stack: COLA filing, production scheduling, merchant-of-record checkout, and carrier age checks at the door. When those tracks stay in sync, the timeline stays around 10 weeks from signed agreement. When track one keeps reopening label copy, track two waits.

What can stretch the timeline?

A few choices add days or weeks without changing the model:

Speed comes from locking creative early and letting licensed partners run their lane without rework.

How is this different from “start a brand someday”?

A traditional liquor brand often waits on capital, inventory, and a full license stack before the first customer. A Handled drop flips the order: audience demand first, production sized to the release, licensed merchant-of-record retail, and your brand on the bottle without you becoming a distillery. Zero upfront on the creator side is the point of the model — you are not funding a warehouse to learn if people want the bottle.

That is also why the honest timeline answer is weeks, not “one day if you hustle.” Alcohol still needs COLA, age verification, and a legal path to the buyer. The compression is in who carries those steps.

FAQ

Is around 10 weeks a guarantee for every drop?

No. It is the typical timeline from signed agreement on a Handled drop when creative locks stay stable. Complex label changes or protected class/type decisions can extend it. Ask for a calendar on your spirit when you reach out to lfd@handledspirits.com.

Do I need my own licenses before the clock starts?

On a Handled drop, you do not take on the production and retail license stack yourself. Licensed partners carry those. You bring brand and audience.

When do I get paid relative to launch?

After the drop closes and orders are processed — not as a drip with every single checkout. Your cut is 20% of SRP. See When Do You Get Paid? for the money path.

Does spirit style change the calendar?

Sometimes. Unaged or simpler label stories usually move faster than claims that need tighter TTB class/type language. Whiskey labeling is a common place creators slow themselves down by using a protected term before the liquid and COLA support it.

Can buyers in every state get the bottle?

No. Ships through a licensed retailer (merchant of record); our retail partners support most but not all US states. Checkout confirms eligibility.
